STEEL VS WOOD: Strength, Resilience and Downright Awesome

Since the early settlement days, wood has always been the go-to material used in the construction of houses. Even today, it is still a material widely used throughout the industry. When you drive past construction sites for new estates, you can see the frames on the horizon like an Elephant graveyard.

But there is a new trend shifting towards the use of steel frames (studs) for the building of homes, and there are many advantages to using steel over wood that may seem surprising to many people out there.

Metal frames/ studs are far lighter than wooden frames, making them easier to transport. Also, due to the hollowness of a steel frame, they take up half the space of a piece of timber. The metal can also be prefabricated, meaning it will arrive to site ready to go.

Ok, we’re not going to sugar coat this, if you look at the straight-up costs of a steel frame, it is going to be more expensive. However, it’s in the labour costs that you will save. Steel frames/studs can be built faster than wooden frames, and the money you save on labour helps balance out the material cost difference.

Unlike wood, steel is not prone to warping or twisting. For wood, the added build-up of moisture can lead to the timber developing mould as well as rot, something that steel is very resistant to. While steel is prone to rust, simply installing a vapour barrier or sill gasket around the bottom of the frame will greatly reduce the possibility of developing rust.

One of the best things about all the screws and fasteners required for steel frames/studs, is they can be undone. If, for whatever reason, a mistake is made with measuring, or vertical alignment, simply undo the offending stud(s), re-measure or adjust accordingly and you’re done. This is also a big plus if the residents ever with to renovate.

Insect Resistant

While wood can attract termites and carpenter ants, so far there is no insect on the planet that has developed a taste for metal, it’s too… metallic.
