Why steel is the best for residential builds

DSC02286

Steel has been a favourite material of the construction industry ever since the first skyscrapers sprouted out of Chicago in the 1800s. The superior strength of carbon and iron combination has seen it married with concrete for structures that would be impossible otherwise. But the highest the majority residential builds tower in New South Wales is two-storeys, three on the odd occasion. So are the superior strength benefits of a steel build still needed? Well, if you ask a Sydney steel supply shop like us, of course we will say yes. Here’s why:

SPEED & EFFICIENCY

The predictability and accuracy of steel components means it is much less labour intensive material to work with. With the rise of CAD and computer drawings, residential builds can be quoted, manufactured and assembled in no time at all. From the designs of a home through to the assemblage straight off the truck. The benefits of prefabricating sections of the build offsite are no secret to the many smart builders in Sydney’s south-west.

ON-SITE RISKS & COSTS

Steel is a reliable material to work with.

Once the initial structure is up, follow-on trades can get straight to work. The greatest plus-side to a more efficient building process is less time on site. Steel has been noted to reduce approx. 10-20% of labour compared to other construction types. That means less workers on the site, less overtime, less risk of injury and all the other responsibilities that come with having multiple people on your job site at one time.

Once the job is completed, steel will always stand the test of time. You won’t find a termite destroying a steel structure!

SUSTAINABILITY & WASTE

Steel means a considerable amount of less waste on your site. The components are ready to go and assemble when they arrive to your project site. If, in the future, the owner wishes to re-build – the vast majority of the steel can be recovered, re-used or recycled.

The argument of timber versus steel could go on for many years, with the super strong and versatile steel being compared to concrete, timber and whatever new materials we conjure up. One thing is certain, the builders that select steel as their structural material of choice, can rest easy that their builds will stand the test of time.
